On Thursday 26th September, Ash Grange entertained a talented Walsh Junior side in the second game of the 2019/20 season. As with any local derby, the match would bring with it a competitive edge, a vast range of skill on show, resolute determination from both teams, and an abundance of nail-biting drama. After the supporting fans took their places on the side-lines, the referee finally looked down at his ticking watch and thereafter blew his whistle to signal the start of the highly anticipated game.
In what appeared to be a sense of déjà vu from the match a week prior, Walsh Junior piled on the pressure early, yet were unable to unearth a means to break through Ash Grange’s stubborn defence inside the first 10 minutes. With the pressure mounting on the home side, however, the visitors deservingly opened the scoring with a left-footed thunderbolt that almost sent the goal - including frame, net and metal anchors - to the other side of the M25. From here, Ash Grange knew they had to dig deep and take advantage of an enlarged playing surface to turn defence into attack during the second half.
On conclusion of the half time break, Ash Grange decided to adopt a more positive mindset of playing pressing football to put their opponents on the backfoot immediately. With Ash Grange utilising width effectively via the ever-impressive Ollie and Sam, this resulted in Charlie W, who should be immensely proud of his lionhearted performance, being presented with well-earned space to subsequently set-up the equally superb Charlie H who was unfortunate to shoot agonisingly wide.
Since Ash Grange had the majority of possession in the second half, therefore, this clearly demonstrates that the team is gaining confidence to apply the variety of skills learnt at weekly training sessions to different match scenarios, which is extremely pleasing to witness by both the management staff and supporters alike.
While the final result didn’t go our way, it is discernible that the boys continue to amaze the Ash Grange community with the exemplary pride and passion they embrace each time they represent our truly wonderful school at football. In conclusion, I would like to convey my huge admiration to Leo, Jacob, Charlie H, Charlie W, Sam, Josh , Dougie, Ollie, Alfie and Miles who will never cease to give anything less than 100 percent.
Yours in football,
