Match Report - Waverley Abbey V Ash Grange Football Team 19/9/19

On Thursday 19th September, Ash Grange travelled to face a highly skilled and well-drilled Waverley Abbey team in their first game of the 2019/20 season. With the sun continuing to beat down on an already dry pitch, the boys appeared extremely proud to line-up wearing the brand new purple and yellow kit, in front of their super supportive away fans. After a much anticipated kick-off, the referee finally looked down at his ticking watch and thereafter blew his whistle to signal the start of the game.

While Waverley Abbey piled on the pressure early, the Ash Grange defence battled courageously and kept the score line at 0-0 after 10 minutes on the clock; including many outstanding saves from Ash Grange’s determined shot-stopper, Leo W. As the Waverley Abbey pressure increased, however, Ash Grange’s spirited resistance was finally broken as the home side opened the scoring with a wonder volley, which even Lionel Messi himself could only sit back, admire and applaud.

After a brief team talk and much needed drink at half time, the boys took to the pitch with their heads held high and focused on the increasingly tough task in front of them. From this point in the match report, therefore, I can only discuss my enormous admiration for the inspirational character shown by every member of the squad in the face of defeat. Famously, Gary Lineker once said, “Football doesn’t build character, it reveals it” and this quote was certainly befitting of each Ash Grange player against a very strong Waverley Abbey side. Throughout the match, the boys played the Ash Grange way: with fantastic discipline; with unwavering encouragement; with wonderful enthusiasm; and with faultless commitment to give 110 percent in difficult circumstances.

While the final result didn’t go our way, I want to finish by saying a massive well done to Leo, Jacob, Sam, Charlie H, Charlie W, Ollie W, Dougie and Josh who gave everyone at Ash Grange the opportunity to be immensely proud of both yourselves and its magnificent Football Team.

Yours in football,

Mr Terry
