Week beginning 9th March 2020

Dear Parents/Carers,

Well what a week, from worrying about viruses to dressing up as Mary Poppins; all the fun of the fair.

Thank you to everyone for your support with World Book Day, the children looked delightful and really enjoyed the feast of activities that the staff organised.  Year 2 had a wonderful trip to WHSmith and met some real authors!

Coronavirus Update

In light of government advice regarding the Coronavirus, to decrease social interactions (known as Social Distancing) we are doing things differently to protect the children and minimise opportunities for infections in all ages:

  • All school assemblies are postponed until further notice to protect all from exposure
  • Tuesday Afterschool Clubs are postponed until further notice to protect the children from mixing together as much.
  • Children will not be changing in the changing rooms for PE, this will be in classrooms to protect the children from mixing together as much. Swimming is fine because they swim in chlorinated water which kills the germs.
  • Lunchtimes – classes will sit separately in the hall (Currently they sit with buddy classes).

Our Funzone breakfast and afterschool provision will continue as normal.

Any additional recommendations will be notified.

Handwashing is crucial to prevent spread of the virus. Instead of soap bars, we have swapped back to hand soap dispensers, with refillable pumps.  Please encourage your child to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice whilst they wash their hands – this is about the time required to properly wash hands. See the NHS website for guidance at www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-body/best-way-to-wash-your-hands/

For further details on the Coronavirus please visit the government website at www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-information-for-the-public

In the event of a government directive regarding closures we want to be fully prepared to support any learning we can at home. To this end please ensure your email details are up to date, that you are using MarvellousMe and know how to see all the contents of it.

For the children make sure they are able to access:

Mathletics, Readiwrite, Reading Eggs, Times Table Rock Stars (Year 2 to 6)

I have received a parent request on how to use the apps and see what the children can do, I will be organising a training opportunity in the next few weeks.

Gates

Following many months of increasing incidents with both supervised and unsupervised children, I can no longer be sure that the children on site are behaving safely before school.  Therefore, I have decided to keep the whole site closed until 8.40am, to provide only 5 minutes before school starts to get to the correct entrance.  The front, side gates and office will remain closed until 8.40am.

This week children have been seen playing “chicken” in Year 6 and younger children have been left at the gates to walk to Reception and Year 3 entrances.

Pupils remain parent/carers responsibility until they enter the school doors and are not to be dropped at the gates, only at the entrance points.

This change does not affect pupils attending Funzone Breakfast Club who can enter via the school drive. Gymnastic Club attendees should now enter via the school hall door down the school drive.

Parent Reps

Do you have the time to attend a half termly meeting of the Parent Council to represent the views of your class?  We have a vacancy in Preschool and Year 5, if you would be interested and want to know more ask one of the current team or pop in to discuss with me.

Swimming Reminder

Parents please ensure your child has full kit in school - trunks/costume, hat, towel and suitable footwear (flip flops or crocs are ideal) to walk to and from the pool.

We will have a small number of costumes/trunks available to purchase from the office.

Swimming hats are available for £1.

  •  Wednesday - Reception, Year 1 and 2
  • Thursday - Year 3, 4, 5 and 6

Parent Teacher Meetings – Wednesday 25th March

Booking is open for our Parent Teacher Meetings on Wednesday 25th March. The school will be closed to pupils on this day. Book online at www.parents-booking.co.uk/ashgrange

Please contact the school office if you need any assistance.

PTA News

The last day we can accept payments for Secret Mother’s Day gifts is Friday 13th March. Children will then be choosing gifts during school the following week.

There will not be an Easter egg raffle this term as licences need applying for any raffle tickets sold ahead of an event.

Teacher Request for items

Year 5 would like Magazines for their collages

Year 3 would like 2 litre plastic bottles (empty and clean please).

Please hand them in to the class teacher or school office.

Recruitment

We are looking for a School Cleaner, Monday to Friday, 2 hours a day (4pm to 6pm, no flexibility on this), 44 weeks a year, (39 term time/5 weeks/condensed hours during holiday), immediate start (3-month probationary period), £9/hour

To apply: please ask at office for application form or see form on school website (deadline Fri 13 March).

Active Points

Points are being awarded this week for trackers, any child who achieves 5,000 earns 100 points for their team, 10,000 = 300 points and there is an extra 100 points for every additional 1,000 steps.  Get walking!

Eco Points

Week Beginning 9th March is a Focus Week - This week is Not Wasting Energy Week – keeping heating off when not needed, opening windows if the heating is off, keeping doors closed at breaktime to keep the heating in, lights off when not needed, computers off when not needed. Hopefully this important learning will help the children to reduce our wasted energy and yours at home.

Attendance

This week’s class for best attendance was shared between Years 1 and 5, who had 99.2% each – keep up the good work!

To help children come to school on birthdays, we have started a new birthday table. On the years when their birthday falls on a school day, children can invite 2 friends to site with them at the special table, there will be small treats for the birthday children (not their friends).  Immediately I had questions as to holiday birthdays and weekends, I have told the children yes on the years that their birthday falls on a week day in the holiday time. In addition, this will also require full attendance on the last week of the term to promote attendance too.   If it’s a year their birthday falls on a weekend, as they will be having lots of treats on the day at home so they will not need a birthday table at school too.  As a final year treat, Year 6 will all have a time on the table if they have attended on the week either side of their birthday.

Kind regards, Mrs Curtis
