Message from Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a wonderful September we have had at Ash Grange. The children have settled brilliantly and made the most of every learning opportunity available to them.

I am absolutely delighted to share that more than 180 children achieved 100% attendance throughout September. Thank you for your support in ensuring children attend school regularly and are able to benefit from every learning day. Attendance really does make a difference, and we are incredibly grateful for the commitment shown by our families.

Open Days and Our Wonderful Year 6 Ambassadors

This week we held our first Open Day of the year. I would like to extend a huge thank you and congratulations to our Year 6 children, who did a spectacular job showing prospective families around the school.

Visitors were incredibly impressed by their confidence, knowledge of the school and warm interactions with both adults and younger children. They were outstanding ambassadors for Ash Grange and are a credit to themselves, their families and our school community.

We have several more Open Days planned over the coming months and I know they will continue to represent us brilliantly.

Funzone Update

A few weeks ago, we shared a survey regarding our late Funzone sessions. As we explained at the time, some of these sessions were very rarely being used.

Since then, we have continued to monitor attendance and found that the Friday 4.30pm to 6.00pm session is consistently underused, typically serving only one or two children and only reaching three children on a single occasion this term.

As a result, we will be removing the Friday 4.30pm to 6.00pm Funzone session from our offer after today.

Our aim is always to provide services that meet the needs of families while making the best use of staffing and resources.

Exploring a New Wraparound Care Option

You will also have received a survey today asking whether families would value an additional wraparound care session from 3.15pm to 5.00pm.

This session would sit between the current 4.30pm collection and the full evening provision. It would not include a meal and, therefore, would be available at a lower cost than the 6.00pm finish option.

This idea has come directly from conversations with parents, and we are exploring whether it would provide a useful and affordable childcare solution for families who need just a little extra time at the end of the school day.

Breakfast Club Trial

Continuing with our efforts to support families while being mindful of the cost of living, we recently asked parents whether they would be interested in a Breakfast Club.

We were delighted that around 35 families expressed an interest, and we are therefore going to run a trial during the final week before half-term.

Starting on Monday 12th October, children will be able to attend a Breakfast Club between 8.20am and 8.45am in the school hall. They will be offered cereal, toast or a combination of both in a relaxed and social environment, supervised by school staff.

Bookings will be made in the same way as school meals and Fun Zone through the ScoPay platform by Wednesday 7th October.

We are excited to see how this develops and hope it may provide another valuable service for our families.

Trialling a New Year 5 and 6 Drop-and-Go System

As many of you know, parking and traffic around the school continue to create significant challenges for both families and our local community.

To help ease congestion, we are going to trial a new Drop-and-Go system for Year 5 and Year 6 pupils, beginning on Monday 12th October.

Under this arrangement, parents will continue to bring their children to school as normal. However, once children have entered the school grounds and made their way onto the front playground, parents may leave rather than waiting until the bell rings.

I would like to stress that this is not permission for children to travel to school unsupervised. Parents remain responsible for ensuring their child arrives safely on the school premises.

This trial is being considered because our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils consistently demonstrate maturity and appropriate behaviour on the playground. Staff will be present on site, but children will be expected to behave sensibly and safely during this period.

We hope that, alongside the Breakfast Club, this initiative may help reduce traffic and ease pressure on local roads during the busiest part of the morning.

Looking Ahead: Community Swimming

Next week I will be sharing a proposal regarding the possibility of opening our swimming pool after school and at weekends for family use.

For this to be successful, it would require support from parents and community volunteers, as staff are not available to cover all possible sessions. Nevertheless, I am keen to explore whether there is sufficient interest within our school community.

Please keep an eye out for further information.

Your Ideas Matter

One of the things I love most about Ash Grange is the willingness of parents to share ideas and suggestions.

In fact, the proposal for the new 5.00pm wraparound care session came directly from a parent. Fresh perspectives are invaluable and often help us identify solutions we may not otherwise have considered.

Whether you are new to the school or have been part of our community for many years, please continue to share your thoughts and ideas. Together, we can continue to improve the experience for all of our families.

Reception and Nursery Success

I would also like to take this opportunity to say how wonderfully our Reception and Nursery children have settled into school life.

It has been a real joy to see their confidence grow already and to watch them embracing new routines, friendships and learning opportunities. We are very proud of them.

Scooter and Bike Club

Finally, I am delighted by the success of our Wheels Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

To support this initiative and encourage even more active travel, we have purchased additional bike racks and scooter parking facilities. These will be installed shortly and will help us continue promoting healthy, environmentally friendly travel throughout the year.

Thank You

Thank you, as always, for your continued support, encouragement and partnership. Working together enables us to provide the very best opportunities for our children, and I am incredibly grateful for the positive and supportive community that we continue to build together.

Mrs Curtis

Important Reminder: Funzone Drop-Off, Collection and Breakfast Arrangements

We would like to remind all families of our expectations regarding Funzone drop-off and collection arrangements to ensure the safety and smooth running of the provision.

Morning Drop-Off Arrangements

When dropping off children for Funzone, please ensure that children are taken directly to their relevant age-appropriate area.

Nursery children attending Early Drop-Off must be taken to the Nursery area and not to Funzone with older siblings.

  • It is not the responsibility of Funzone staff to escort younger children to their correct provision after arrival.
  • If bringing siblings to different areas of the school, parents and carers must ensure that each child is handed over to the appropriate staff member in the correct location.

Breakfast Arrangements

Breakfast Club operates from 7:45am to 8:45am.

If your child requires breakfast, they should arrive no later than 8:15am. Children arriving at 8:30am do not have sufficient time to settle in and eat breakfast before the school day begins.

If your child is attending after 8:15am, please ensure they have eaten breakfast before arriving.

Funzone Opening Times

Before School and Afterschool Funzone is available 38 weeks per year (term time only) during the following times:

Breakfast Club: 7:45am to 8:45am

Afterschool Club: 3:15pm to 6:00pm

Bookings, Changes and Cancellations

  • New bookings can be made at any time, subject to space being available within our staffing ratios.
  • Bookings can begin immediately if spaces are available.
  • Late bookings requested on the day of the session cannot be guaranteed and will incur an additional £2 administration fee.
  • To cancel a session and avoid being charged, we require one working day's notice.
  • A working day is defined as Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:15pm during term time.

We appreciate your support in following these procedures, which help us provide a safe, organised and enjoyable experience for all children attending Funzone.

Is your Child in Year 6

If your child will reach the age of 11 between 1 September 2026 and 31 August 2027, they will be due to start secondary school in September 2027.

You can apply for a secondary school place from 1 September 2026.

The closing date for on-time applications for secondary schools is 31 October 2026. Please see link here if you need more information.

Attendance

As we welcome both new and returning families to the new academic year, we would like to remind parents and carers of the importance of regular school attendance and the procedures for reporting absences.

A Leave of Absence Form must be completed online for all medical and dental appointments. For any other circumstances, please complete the form at least two weeks before the requested date. Additionally, please provide evidence to support your request. Forms should be submitted in advance, not on the day of the appointment.

Where possible, we kindly ask that appointments be scheduled outside of school hours to minimise disruption to learning.

Please refer to our Attendance Guide for Parents on our website under 'Attendance 2026-27'. This is a termly reminder to ensure all parents/carers have the most up-to-date attendance information.

Attendance Information:

If you take your child out of school without the approval of the school, you will be liable to receive a penalty notice per parent/carer and the following will apply:

1. If you have not incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/these children since 19 August 2024, then the penalty notice will be charged at the rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. This will be reduced to £80.00 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the notice. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

2. If you have incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/ these children since 19 August 2024, the rolling 3 year period will be activated from the date of the first penalty notice and the second penalty notice will be charged at the flat rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. There will be no reduction for payment within 21 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

3. If you have incurred 2 penalty notices relating to this child/ these children in the rolling 3 year period since the first penalty notice was issued, then you will NOT receive a third penalty notice – Surrey County Council will have no option but to consider a prosecution, per parent/carer per child, in the Magistrates Court under s 444 Education Act 1996.

All guidance explained here refers to the School’s Attendance Policy on our website, which was developed in response to UK Government Law and the statutory attendance guidance — Working together to improve school attendance—from August 2024.

Cycle to School Week - 5th to 9th October 2026

We are excited to announce that Ash Grange Nursery and Primary School will be taking part in Cycle to School Week, taking place from Monday 5th October to Friday 9th October 2026.

Cycle to School Week is a national initiative that encourages children, families and staff to choose active travel for their journey to and from school. Whether your child cycles, scoots or rides with you, taking part can help promote healthier habits, improve wellbeing, build confidence and contribute to a cleaner environment around our school.

We would love as many children as possible to take part during the week. Pupils can cycle to school on one day or throughout the week. Every journey counts!

Please remember:

  • Children must wear a correctly fitted helmet when cycling or scooting.
  • Bicycles and scooters should be roadworthy and well maintained.
  • Pupils should follow road safety rules and take care when travelling to and from school.
  • Bikes and scooters must be stored in the designated areas on the school site.

Throughout the week, we will be celebrating those who take part and promoting the many benefits of active travel.

By choosing to cycle, scoot or walk where possible, we can work together to reduce congestion around the school gates, improve air quality and encourage healthy lifestyles for our children.

Find here some top tips for cycling to school.

Thank you for your support. We look forward to seeing lots of pupils joining in and helping make our school run healthier, happier and more sustainable.

Individual Photo Day, 7 October

Make sure your child wears a full uniform and looks smart for photo day.

Please ensure your child comes to school in full school uniform and is looking smart for Photo Day.

Reception parents: Although Wednesday is a PE day, we kindly ask that Reception children come to school in their school uniform for their photographs. There is no need to bring their PE kit on this day.

Harvest Festival

We will be holding our Year 3 Harvest Festival Assembly at 9am on 16th October 2026 (Year 3 parents/carers welcome) and will continue supporting the Farnham Foodbank. Donations from schools play a crucial role in ensuring that they can continue to provide food for those in crisis within the local community, especially during these challenging times.

We would very much appreciate any non-perishable food items or toiletries. In particular, they have asked if Ash Grange could collect the following items:

  • Tinned potatoes

  • UHT juice such as apple juice and orange juice

  • Tinned fruit

  • Rice

In addition, we are expanding our efforts by offering the option to donate other food items, which will be given to our local church St. Peter’s Church.

Please send your child in with any donations on or before the 16th October 2026.

With the rising cost of living, if anyone requires additional support, please contact the school. We can confidentially guide families to further help.

Open Days

For families looking to join Ash Grange in September 2027, we are pleased to offer four Open Day events for parents and carers. These visits provide the opportunity to see the school in action, enjoy a pupil-led tour, and attend a presentation from the Headteacher.

To book a place, please complete the online booking form here.

Please note that, unfortunately, we are unable to offer tours outside these scheduled dates.

Pre-Loved School Uniform Available

Thanks to the generosity of our school community, we have a range of donated pre-loved school uniforms available in the school office. These items have been kindly donated by our community to our community. If your child could benefit from any uniform items, please pop into the office and help yourself.

While all items are free of charge, any voluntary donation would be greatly appreciated and will help us continue to support families within our school community.

Party Box Hire Available!

Planning a birthday party or special celebration? Why not hire one of our Party Boxes!

Each Party Box contains a selection of party items and can be hired for just £3.00, plus a refundable £10.00 deposit (£13.00 total). If you would like to hire the complete set of items, the cost is £3.00, plus a refundable £20.00 deposit (£23.00 total).

Your deposit will be returned once all items are returned within 48 hours, clean and in good, usable condition.

Please note that if any items are lost or damaged, replacement costs will be deducted from the deposit. Many items are purchased in sets of eight, so where a full set requires replacement, the cost of replacing the entire set will apply.

For more information or to book a Party Box, please contact the school office.

Recycling at Ash Grange

We are collecting hard to recycle items to help save our planet!

At Ash Grange, we collect milk bottle lids, biscuit wrappers, cheese wrappers, used stamps, old coins and bras. The bras will be sent to girls and women in Africa.

If you have any of these items and want to recycle them, there is a collection point in the Eco Shop at the entrance of the school. You can leave these in the appropriate drawer in the Eco shop, and we will recycle them!

Additionally, you can bring clothing for recycling to the office any time!

Thank you for helping us make the world greener and support communities!

Textile Recycling

Thank you to everyone who has supported our new textile recycling bank — our first collection reached an impressive 213kg! Your donations directly help our school fundraising and support communities across Eastern Europe and Africa.

A reminder that the collection bank is available all year round. You can donate clothing (including branded uniform), pairs of shoes, accessories, soft toys, and sheets at any time. Items can be dropped at the office or, for larger amounts, you can arrange access to drive down and unload.

All donations are reused or recycled, helping reduce textile waste while supporting our school.

What can be donated:

  • Clothing (including branded uniform)
  • Pairs of shoes
  • Accessories (hats, scarves, gloves, handbags, belts, etc.)
  • sheets
  • Soft toys

Donations can be placed in any plastic bag.

Pharmacy First: Help for Common Childhood Illnesses

As children return to school, coughs, colds and other common illnesses often start to circulate.
Community pharmacies can provide expert advice and treatment for a range of common conditions through the NHS Pharmacy First service, often without the need for a GP appointment.
Pharmacy First can provide support and NHS funded treatment for:

  • Earache (aged 1-17 years)
  • Sore throat (aged 5 years and over)
  • Infected insect bites (aged 1 year and over)
  • Impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
  • Sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)

Parents can speak to their local pharmacist for advice and, where clinically appropriate, NHS treatments.

For older students in sixth forms and colleges, most pharmacies also offer contraception services and sexual health support. Find a pharmacy offering contraception services on the nhs.uk website.
