Phonics and Spelling


We are passionate about spelling at Ash Grange as this is the gateway to reading and writing.  Scroll down this page to see the programmes for different age groups.  


Children are taught to play with and understand sounds from their early years. Throughout the Early Years (Nursery 1 to Reception Class) children learn phonics through the Jolly Phonics system

Once children have mastered all the basic phonics they move on to Letters and Sounds.



Letters and Sounds (Nursery to Year 2)

Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills. It aims to build children's phonic knowledge and skills so that children can speak, read and write well. It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills for children starting at Reception Year and continuing to Year 2.  (Aspects may be used in interventions for older children who have difficulties learning or applying their phonetic knowledge).  There are six phases:



Phonic Knowledge and Skills

Phase One


Children learn to hear and play with sounds, patterns and rhymes. 

Phase Two

(Reception) up to 6 weeks

Learning first 19 letters of the alphabet and one sound for each. Blending sounds together to make words. Segmenting words into their separate sounds. Beginning to read simple captions.

Phase Three

(Reception) up to 12 weeks

The remaining 7 letters of the alphabet and the early two letter sounds, e.g. th, sh, ch.  Reading captions, sentences and questions.

Phase Four

(Reception) 4 to 6 weeks

No new sounds are taught in this phase. Children learn to blend and segment longer words e.g. swim, clap, jump.

Phase Five

(Throughout Year 1)

Now children move on to learn more ways to make the same sound, eg. a, ai, ay all make the a sound.


Phase Six

(Throughout Year 2 and beyond)

Working on spelling, including prefixes and suffixes, doubling and dropping letters etc.




School Spelling Scheme (Spring/Summer Term Year 2 to Year 6)

Once children have mastered the Letters and Sounds system they move onto our own unique spelling programme which delivers all of the spelling requirements of the National Curriculum up to Year 6, in a clear consistent and coherent method. Children learn to spell the root word of every word and then add suffixes and a prefix. This is a challenging programme that extends children to their full potential.


Each week children follow this programme:

Monday – Using the week’s spellings, children are assessed to identify what they know and what they need to learn next.  Spellings are sent home so that parents/carers can help their child improve over the week.  Here is an example:

Tuesday to Thursday – Children have learning opportunities to learn, practise, consolidate and apply their understanding.

Friday – Children are assessed to identify their progress over the week.


Every month the children have a week when the previous weeks' learning is checked in different ways to ensure they have retained the learning.


All children's written work is marked for accuracy and children are expected to spell words correctly using their skills, learnt spellings, word mats and dictionaries.  


In addition we provide individual access to Readiwriter, an online learning tool for children in Reception to Year 6.
