This term, our Gods and Mortals topic has helped us develop a deeper understanding of life in Ancient Greece. In English, we explored the exciting myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, which inspired us to write our own imaginative myths. We also learnt about the Ancient Olympic Games and used our knowledge to write non chronological reports.
In History, we studied the fascinating world of the Greek Gods and compared two of the most important city-states in Ancient Greece, Athens and Sparta. We explored how they were similar and different, gaining a greater understanding of Greek life and culture.
One of our favourite pieces of learning this term was in Art. We explored the designs and patterns found on Ancient Greek pottery before creating our own Greek pot designs. We then used the coiling technique with clay to make our own pots, carefully shaping and decorating them to reflect the style of Ancient Greek artefacts.
A huge thank you to Milea,Emily,Noah,Leo,Ava Jean,Eddie,Jack J,Sofia,Betsy T,Jack C,Callum,Olivia,Ava and Navaeh. They brought in their wonderful project homework this term and shared their creativity, hard work, and enthusiasm with the class. We were delighted to see such a variety of imaginative projects, including mazes that were carefully designed and created by the children, inspired by the story of Theseus and the Minotaur. Many children were also inspired by their peers' work, using these ideas to create their own unique mazes.
We enjoyed reading the children's original myths and seeing the fantastic mythical creatures they crafted using a range of materials, including cardboard and Lego. In addition, some children created engaging word searches about the Greek Gods for their classmates to complete. It has been wonderful to see so much creativity, effort, and learning reflected in their projects. Well done, everyone!
Year 3 had a great start to our topic on Ancient Greece. We took an exciting flight to Greece, but not to modern-day Greece. Instead, we travelled back in time to Ancient Greece! The children were fully engaged as they explored different artefacts and learned that this period was a very long time ago, even before any of us were born. We learned that BC means "Before Christ" and that Ancient Greece existed during this time. Using modelling clay, the children experimented with different textures and explored what they could create to develop their pottery skills.
We looked at examples of Greek pottery and designed our own vases using traditional Greek patterns. The children created pictures on their pottery inspired by the Olympic Games and ancient Greek stories. In the afternoon, we went outside to take part in our own Olympic Games. The events included javelin, running, long jump, and horse and chariot racing. It was great fun, and everyone enjoyed experiencing what the Ancient Greek Olympics may have been like!
