Three types of emergency procedures
Dear Parents/Carers,
As part of our ongoing commitment to keeping all children and staff safe, we regularly practise a range of emergency procedures throughout the school year. These drills help ensure that everyone knows what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency and can respond calmly and safely.
At Ash Grange, we practise three types of emergency procedures:
Fire Drill
This is a regular evacuation drill which prepares everyone to leave the building safely in the event of a fire.
Code Red
A Code Red may be used if there is an accident or medical emergency where a person needs privacy and should not be moved until emergency services arrive. Children are directed to their classrooms or the hall, and blinds may be closed to ensure the individual receives privacy and dignity.
Code Purple
A Code Purple is used if there is a potential safety concern on the school site. During a Code Purple, children and staff go into their classrooms, doors are secured, blinds are closed, and everyone remains quiet until the all-clear is given.
When discussing this procedure with children, we use the example of an unknown dog entering the school grounds. We do not refer to strangers, as we do not want to create unnecessary fear or anxiety. The drill is explained in a calm, age-appropriate way, with the focus on keeping everyone safe.
We will be carrying out a Code Purple drill today and a Code Red drill next Tuesday. Staff will support and reassure pupils throughout, and the drills will be conducted sensitively.
Children in Years 1 to 6 have already been introduced to these procedures in assembly, while children in Nursery and Reception will be supported by their class teachers in an age-appropriate manner.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
Kind regards,
